La Fortuna sits in Costa Rica’s Northern Plains, on the Caribbean-influenced side of the Continental Divide, where weather patterns don’t follow the same familiar script as much of the rest of the country.

That helps explain why looking at Costa Rica as simply “dry season” and “rainy season” can be misleading here. Whereas the general rule Costa Rica is that the dry season means weeks or even months with very little rain, around Arenal, water is a year-round element, feeding the rainforest, rivers, wetlands, and waterfalls that define our region.

Arenal Volcano can emerge completely clear in the morning, then disappear behind clouds, and reappear again after a passing rain. A rainbow may even show up when the timing is right.

Arenal’s Drier Months: More Sunshine, Same Rainforest

December through April – and particularly the months of February, March, and April – generally bring less rainfall, even in Arenal, and there’s means there’s plenty extra to enjoy about these months.

Longer periods of sustained blue skies and sunshine make it especially easy to spend whole days outside. Head out early for the trails around Arenal Volcano, cross hanging bridges through the canopy, ride horseback through the countryside, visit La Fortuna Waterfall, or get out onto Lake Arenal by kayak or paddleboard. When you have a long list of things you want to do, this drier stretch makes it easy to make plans.

They can also bring those spectacular clear-sky moments when Arenal Volcano suddenly seems to dominate everything around it. And because you’re still in the rainforest, the backdrop doesn’t disappear just because rainfall drops. Rarely does it mean waking up to rain and going to bed with it still falling.
